Petersfield's Ben Southall has beaten 35,000 applicants to win what has been dubbed the ‘Best Job in the World' - a £73,400 salary to look after a tropical Australian island.

The 34-year-old landed the six-month dream assignment after spending four days on the island undergoing ‘tests' which included snorkelling in crystal clear waters, wandering along beautiful beaches and relaxing at a spa.

Ben, who has been working as a charity worker up until now, scored the job after beating candidates from across the world.

His ‘work' will include swimming, exploring Hamilton Island in the Great Barrier Reef and writing a blog to promote the area.

The job is part of an £800,000 tourism campaign to publicise the charms of north-eastern Queensland.
Ben starts work on July 1.

He told local radio today: "It's been absolutely a real railroad of a ride.

"It has been non-stop. We haven't had much sleep. We have really been dipping our toes in the waters of the Great Barrier Reef.

"There are a huge amount of experiences to have over the next six months."

He said he was looking forward to taking up residence in his new luxury villa which overlooks the Coral Sea.
