Eco-town status will bring massive amount of funding
Friday 24th of July 2009
Eco-town status will bring a massive amount of funding for facilities, infrastructure and community groups, it has been revealed.
Whitehill Bordon will share £60million over two years with the other three Eco-towns for facilities, eco-homes and new green technology.
The town will now have access to £200m for innovative projects including low-emission transport.
And community organisations will now also have access to a £70million to support eco projects.
The town will benefit from a new zero-carbon school by 2013 and the Government is funding a feasibility study to look into providing a rail line from the town to London .
Eco-town status will also ensure that there is training for new jobs involving ‘green' skills in the town.
For the town's drivers there will be electric car plug-in points installed across the town.
The Government has also confirmed that the scale of the development will be dependent on environmental studies.
And a recent Government study has already predicted that the town will benefit economically from the Eco-town status.
The town was one of four to be awarded Eco-town status and now Whitehill Bordon will have the chance to share ideas and activities with other carbon-busting communities.
Cllr Ferris Cowper, the Leader of East Hampshire District Council, said: "We are over the moon that Whitehill Bordon has been awarded Eco-town status.
"The Government has told us that we are now in line for a massive amount of funding and we will start bidding for this straight away.
"The funding has been earmarked for facilities, infrastructure and to support community groups - which is fantastic news.
"This project is all about providing the kind of town and local facilities that the people of Whitehill Bordon have been calling for.
"We will ensure that the community continues to be involved at every step.
"If you have an idea or suggestion then please contact us on whitehillbordon@easthants.gov.uk
"And look out for consultation events which will be happening later this year."
