Police crime map is praised

Thursday 9th February 2012

A screen grab from the crime mapping website

Damian Hinds has praised the work of local police in East Hampshire and welcomed enhancements to the national crime mapping website www.police.uk.

The website now includes incidents of crime and antisocial behaviour recorded at train stations. Soon, incidents occurring at or near significant local sites like parks and schools will be added as well.

In addition, the website now has more specific detail on the precise location of incidents while still protecting anonymity.

From May, the website will also show the action taken by police in response to each incident and the outcome of any judicial proceedings.

Damian Hinds said: “This is an important new source of information for local communities. It is very useful to be able to see the obvious major issues for different areas so clearly illustrated, and it gives an insight into the targeting and prioritising that the police have to do.

“When we see, mapped out, the variety of town centres and rural communities which they cover, together with the really considerable distances involved, you have to be impressed at both their professionalism and their flexibility on the job.”
