Masterchef The Pupil at Churcher’s College Junior School

Thursday 16th February 2012

Pupils at Churcher’s College Junior School got the chance to experience the pressure of cooking for a panel of discerning judges as part of their Citizenship Week.

The week of ‘life skills’ was linked to the PSHCE curriculum and was set up to reward the children for all the hard work they had put in leading up to the Entrance exam at the end of January.

On Wednesday 1 February they were treated to a cooking’masterclass’ from Peter Haldenby, a parent at the school and qualified chef, who taught the pupils basic rules of the kitchen, cutting skills and how to make a one pot meal for under a fiver.

The two meals of chicken risotto and Mexican Nachos certainly inspired the young chefs as it was their turn the following day to produce a meal of their own.

On Thursday, teacher Alex Greenaway, demonstrated the art of pasta making before the whole year group descended on the local supermarket with only five pounds per team to buy their ingredients.

With only one camping stove, one knife and a limited larder the pupils worked in teams of four to make their signature dishes. After the immortal words, “1 hour, 1 plate of food, cook “were uttered the teams fired into action.

The panel of judges which included Head of Catering at Churcher’s College, Anne Hodgkins and Head of Junior School, Seona Rivett, were all impressed by the quality of the fare on offer.

Every group delivered their meal on time and the winning team of Aryana Khosravi, Holly Conder, Imogen Evans and Alex Mayson, nicknamed the ‘Stir Fry Girls’ , produced an exceptional dish of Crispy Chicken Stir Fry, served with egg noodles and stir fry vegetables.

Head judge Alex Greenaway described the dish as “stunning, absolutely stunning- a dish packed full of flavour!!!”
