Churcher’s Pupils Search out their Heritage

Who makes our laws?
Does the Queen rule our country?
Churcher’s College Junior School’s Year 6 set off to London to get some answers!
On a crisp winter morning; a brisk walk past 10 Downing Street, past the Cenotaph, through Horseguards and on to Westminster Abbey, set the tone for a day of discovering our heritage and history.
The Abbey quickly revealed its secrets – from the tomb of Elizabeth 1 to the host of artists commemorated in Poets Corner. Of course the route that Will and Kate took to the altar was a source of great interest.
On to the Houses and Parliament and a chance to follow in the footsteps of the Queen when she opens the new Parliament; to stand face to face with the opposition across the dispatch boxes; counting through the ‘ayes’ or the ‘no’s’ ; and taking in the statues and paintings of great leaders through the ages.
Down the river and we go back in time – stepping out at Tower Bridge. And then a chance to dabble in some gruesome past – racks and torture, final messages carved into the thick prison walls; jewels and armour so magnificent it takes your breath away.
And so after a full day in our capital city, Year 6 were able to return home with many questions answered.
