Review: Jack Robert Hardman
ALBUM: Jack Robert Hardman
ARTIST: Jack Hardman
Spring 2012 will see the release of Jack Hardman’s eclectic debut album ‘Jack Robert Hardman’ and, rather than a representational song, reviewers are receiving a single blended track of the album’s sounds to download which, while novel, doesn’t really give a fellow enough substance to dig in to. Therefore I can only relay to you a fleeting impression…
Hardman’s voice is an airy affair and, regardless of the many formats it is worked into here, hard to get excited about lacking any of the standout qualities that similarly breathy vocalists make the most of – innocence, ethereal or childish aspects etc. but at least he makes up for some of this by trying lots of things (which can be viewed as either real bravery or label cynicism).
The overall effect of the amalgamated track is of slightly dull competence rather than the mission statement of a dashing young popstrel set to storm the charts.
This artist needs to decide on which field to master (or continue to be a Jack of all and master of none ffnar ffnar). For my filthy buck the electronica angles suit the voice best and shows most promise.
5/10
The single ‘Famous’ is released on 6 Feb

The compressed American-style mix is a clean, shiny affair but the addition of such upfront keys somehow re-Europises your impression of the band, all of whom are clearly working flat-out here.

Industrial elements wind around bouncing, almost Primus-like distorted riffery and ragged vocals that remind you of an Obsolete-era Fear Factory.

This band clearly want a lot, they want to get into all the strange 90′s-rooted nerd boxes Rock had laid out. Both male and female vocalists give great performances but the distinctive latter is certainly the USP here

While it maintains a sound very much of their own, this colossal album really does open them up to everyone who loves to get down and dirty with some seriously heavy music.

The pace of the story was excellent, and there were no lulls in which to feel bored. It is the extremes of the role which make the performance so commanding. It ranges from tender and funny (Haig’s comic timing is fantastic) through to the sheer physicality of his portrayal of a man trapped in an extremely painful illness of body and mind that leaves him scratching, writhing and ranting uncontrollably. It is impossible to take your eyes off him whenever he is on stage
