Alton Film Festival planned for 2013
Thursday 29th September 2011
The golden age of film will be coming to Alton as the town prepares to host a celebration of classic titles from the 1940s.
Originally envisaged as an event for the 2012 calendar, it has been decided to re-schedule for the week of September 14 -21 2013 because of the number of high profile events already planned nationally and locally next year.
The Golden Age of Film Festival is supported by Alton Town Council, East Hampshire District Council and the Economic and Development Unit of Hampshire County Council.
“This is a great opportunity for everyone in the local community to become involved in what will be a unique event,” said a spokesperson for the organising team.
A number of potential local venues have expressed interest in the festival and other organisations and local businesses are considering what help can be given to create a full weeks programme of activities.
The festival will be advertised nationally and amongst the most popular films that will attract audiences will be Brief Encounter and A Canterbury Tale.
Around each screening will be other activities themed to reflect the film itself, for example, the Brief Encounter experience could include a trip on the Mid Hants Railway, afternoon tea and a talk by members of the society that has helped to preserve the famous Cairnforth Station which was used as a location for the film.
Younger visitors will be able to enjoy cartoons of the period as well as interpretation sessions and interactive talks by veterans.
The festival team are not short of ideas, but they do need more people from the local community to get involved in what is quite a major undertaking. Schools, community groups, shops, businesses, friends will all have something to offer especially if they have an interest in film. Bringing people into the town will generate trade as well as the opportunity to promote the town to new audiences.

Ideas for events connected with “A Canterbury Tale”:
The river Wey starts near Alton. Is it navigable enough for the local kids to recreate the river battle?
You’re a few miles away from St Martha-on-the-Hill, just south-east of Guildford, where the Chaucerian pilgrims in the opening scenes were filmed but Alton is shown on the map at the beginning so a group of Chaucerian riding through the town would be most appropriate
