West Tisted
West Tisted is just off the A32 about nine miles south west of Alton. At the time of the Domesday Survey West Tisted belonged to the bishopric of Winchester, and was held by Ranulf of the bishop.
The church of St Mary Magdalen is Saxon in origin and has a Norman font and a roof whose beams are 700 years old. It also has a tablet to Sir Benjamin Tichborne and his wife, who hid from Cromwell’s forces in the Civil War in an ancient oak tree not far from the church after the Battle of Cheriton. He was sheriff of Southampton and lived in the village.
