Medstead
Medstead along with Four Marks is one of the highest villages in Hampshire at 700 feet above sea level. The village is about 5 miles west of Alton and has a population of approximately 2000. It is a very rural community, with a relatively high number of horse owners and yards – three riding stables and around 60 private yards. The parish has 105 horses per 1000 people, compared to a UK average of 17.
The village’s church was originally Norman but has since been restored. Medstead Manor has been bought by an American Roman Catholic Order, and the Convent of St. Lucy has been established there.
The village still has a large village green where football and cricket are played. Medstead and Four Marks railway station is one of the stops for the Watercress Line steam railway.
